[FAQs]
Q: What is my
child going to be doing?
A: A typical day is split into instruction and practice.
Mornings will usually be instruction introducing new
concepts and afternoons will be putting those concepts into
practice. There will be plenty of individual work time.
Students will have plenty of chances to practice debate and
speech!
Q: What benefits/skills
does debate offer?
A: Debaters refine their speaking,
persuasion, confidence, research, leadership, activism, and
quick analytical thinking skills (just to name a few).
Q: How can I tell how well
my child is doing? How can I make sure my child is not
slacking off?
A: We invite you to watch your child
during the tournament or to communicate with us when you
pick up your child. In fact, we encourage discourse between
parents and the instructors! If we feel that your child is
not working to the best of his or her abilities, we will
contact you. Each student will also receive written
feedback after each debate.
Q: Will I have to pay for
materials?
A: No, you only have to provide your own
lunch and note-taking materials and highlighters. The
tuition fee covers the rest!
Q: What does my child need
to bring?
A: Highlighters, pens, pencils, notepad,
and a lunch.
Q: What happens if I am
late dropping off or picking up my
child?
A: If you will be late
in the morning, please call us prior to 9:00 AM. If you
will be late picking up, please call to tell us when you
expect to arrive. We do expect you to be on time dropping
off and picking up, but if you cannot, please make sure to
call us as soon as possible.
Q: Won't camp be boring?
Isn't debate camp a nerdy thing to do?
A: No! Debate can be fun and fulfilling
at the same time. We will play many fun games, especially
theater sports games (like the TV show "Who's Line is it
Anyway?"). Making new friends is the most fun part! You
should feel proud to be doing debate. (At the very least,
being a member of a debate team will give you a little
something extra when it comes time to apply to
colleges!)
