A Day at Champion Debate

Any summer camp should be about the campers, and here at Champion Debate, we understand that. With many of us bringing personal experience to the table, we've endevoured to strike a balance between work and play that'll keep everyone learning and happy.

On this hub page, you'll find a brief overview of a day at Champion Debate, along with links to more detailed information. Have fun, and we hope to see you soon!

The Tour
Rise and shine! [8:30 A.M.]

Time to wake up! At 8:30 in the morning, our staff arrives on site and begins to set up for the day's classes. Most of us retire to the staff room for a brief conference; others handle check-in and drop off.

After we've checked them in, campers can either play games or work one-on-one with their counselor if they need help.

Need help getting here in the morning? Many debaters take advantage of our carpool service!

Start the day! [9:00 A.M.]

At 9:00, we gather the campers in the main room for a quick set of morning announcements. Once we've laid out the basic agenda for the day, everyone breaks into groups known as labs. Each lab is headed by two to three counselors.

These labs are more or less equivalent to teams; during this time, each lab will have a thirty minute meeting with their leaders to ask questions or just relax.

They'll also get to know us-- you can too!

Let the lessons begin! [9:30 A.M.]

Once everyone's settled down and woken up, the heart of the day begins. Our lessons are taught in rotations, with each set of counselors teaching according to their specialty. Campers will rotate with their labs, but also participate in a number of group activities with members from other labs.

Lessons have enough time built in for reviews and one-on-one attention at the end of each block, or just a little time to take a breather. If you're interested in what we're teaching, click here!

Lunch! [12:30 P.M.]

Everyone gets hungry, and we take an hour for lunch to give everyone some time to both eat and relax. For many, the long lunch and opportunity to go outside (under counselor supervision, of course) brings back memories of recess.

By the third day though, most campers choose to do debate work with friends during lunch-- and while we have to eat as well, we're glad to help out!

Campers are expected to bring their own lunches!

End of the day! [4:30 P.M.]

By 4:30, almost everyone is ready to call it a day. A half hour lab meeting lets everyone ask some questions before camp officially ends at 4:30. Our staff stays on site to work one-on-one with anyone who needs it, as well as to play games and supervise.

Our check out procedures mirror those in the morning-- we make sure to verify that whoever is picking up campers is authorized to do so. No one is ever left alone-- but after 5:00 P.M., we're forced to start charging aftercare.
